Hide and Seek, 3/19/11

(CNN) Saturday’s full moon will be a super “perigee moon”—the biggest in almost 20 years... When it’s at perigee, the moon is about 31,000 miles (50,000 km) closer to Earth than when it’s at the farthest point of its orbit, also known as apogee...“The last full moon so big and close to Earth occurred in March of 1993,” said Geoff Chester with the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington. “I’d say it’s worth a look.”...As rare as it is, it may be worth a look. Miss it and you’ll have to wait until 2029 to see it again.

We were excited to shoot, but it was a challenge with the clouds, this first shot is probably the only one that shows how large the moon was. As it rose, so did the thick clouds, finally when it got high, the moon no longer looked larger than normal. Uggh.

The predicted moon rise was 7:09 but my first shot of the moon was 7:28. By 8:05, I started only taking shots of the moon, and post process with a crop and some adjustments to get the details.7:34

The best thing is getting together afterwards for a meal. Stan C, Maureen, Hiromi, Erick, Shun Wah and myself enjoyed dinner at Asahi Grill. The news that night showed shots from other places in the world and yes those showed the enormous moon. Uggh, the next one will be in 2029.

Honolulu Festival, 3/12 &13/11

Fireworks Show Canceled for Honolulu Festival

Organizers of the 2011 Honolulu Festival announced that the Nagaoka Fireworks Show planned for Sunday, March 13, has been canceled out of respect to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on Thursday, March 10. The decision to cancel was made following discussions between Festival organizers and officials from Nagaoka City, Japan, where the fireworks show originates from and is one of the cities that suffered damage on Thursday.

However, the rest of the Honolulu Festival continued.

"The Honolulu Festival is Hawaii's premier cultural event, promoting understanding, economic cooperation and ethnic harmony between the people of Hawaii and the Pacific Rim region."

Saturday, 3/12/11

Erick and I went between Ala Moana Center Stage and the Convention Center. At the Convention Center, it was a joy to see such energy...






This very entertaining percussion group is from Alberta, Canada.

Again endless energy.


This little girl is only 4 years old.

Sunday, 3/13/11

Today, Milton S., Roger, and Shun Wah and I enjoyed the parade. We did see Milton H., Stan C., Cora and Amy.
While waiting, I saw a neat pattern with the balconies and shadows, and this lady walking by.

Potato Peeling Be Gone

Anyone knows me knows, I don't really cook. So when friend Audrey shared this with me, I thought even though you may enjoy cooking you maybe happy to know a faster way remove the skin of potatoes for those yummy potato salads, gnocchi, and mashed (smashed) potatos. Thanks Audrey!!!

Snippets of this weekend, 2/26 & 27/11

Sat. 2/26/11

According to an ephemeris application, the sun was to rise between the twin islands seen from Lanikai Beach at 6:57. I met up with photo group,"I Wanna Shoot So Badly". It was fun but the dark clouds prevented a beautiful sunrise.

In response to Photo buddy, Jalna's comment. Here is a link to The Photographer's Ephemeris. I too was curious. I went to Apple Store as I did not know how to surf the web for this info. It is very cool. Too bad, I don't have an iPhone nor an iPad, hee hee I do have an iTouch - so I will have to rely on Erick if he chooses to get this. Guess what there is one for both Mac and PC: photoephemeris.

As you may guess, the dark clouds did bring rain. Yikes, protect your cameras!!!
Later Richard helped me take pics of this talented group: Nanakuli Performing Arts Center (NPAC). I was fortunate to see them before and looked forward to taking pictures again. Here is link to their performance on Nov. 21, 2010

Sun. 2/27/11

Richard and I returned to Waimea Valley Park, our friend Andy lost an item which we wanted to help him find. Sorry Andy, no luck. However, I couldn't resist taking pics while we were there. This Park is a photographer's paradise.

Believe it or not this leaf is green and on the underside it is red.

As we drove back, again, we were awed by God's beauty.
